5 Birthmarks of the Born Again Christian

What is a Built-in Again Christian?

While the entire Bible stresses certainty and balls for Christians who are born-over again, there'southward one department of Scripture that stakes out this theme as its cardinal focus—the letter of the alphabet of 1 John.

As we advisedly read through one John, nosotros find a 5-fold argument for the balls of conservancy—five of the birthmarks of the Christian. These are characteristics and traits of someone who is born again through religion in Jesus Christ.

"That which was from the beginning, which nosotros have heard, which we have seen with our optics, which we have looked at and our easily have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we take seen it and testify to information technology, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to u.s.. Nosotros proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, and then that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete." 1 John ane:ane-4

  • 1. Born Again Christian: The Birthmark of Confession

    1. Born Once again Christian: The Birthmark of Confession

The first is the birthmark of confession, described in 1 John five:1: "Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God." Before you can accept balls of salvation, you have to believe and be saved. Yous accept to confess Jesus Christ as Lord. Some people assume they are saved because they grew up in a Christian culture, or they have gone to church all their lives, or they have been baptized, or they have tried to live a good life. Even so they've never distinctly and personally confessed Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.

The Bible teaches that we are sinners, separated from God by a sinful nature. Nosotros tin never earn, buy, or climb our way into heaven. By our own efforts or goodness, we can never be saved. That'due south why God became a homo who lived a wholly righteous life, died on the cantankerous, shed His claret for united states of america, and rose from the expressionless. He paid our penalty, took our judgment upon Himself, and He offers us the opportunity to be born again.

  • 2. Born Again Christian: The Birthmark of Change

ii. Born Once more Christian: The Birthmark of Modify

If the first birthmark is our confession of Christ as our Savior and Lord, the second is a changed life, as we see in ane John 2:29: "Everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him." When Jesus truly saves us, information technology makes a difference in how we think, deed, speak, and conduct ourselves. The Bible says, "If anyoneisin Christ,he isa new cosmos; old things have passed away; behold, all things take become new" (two Corinthians v:17).

As we begin learning to practice righteousness, our habits alter. We will not exist sinlessly perfect while we're on this planet; but if we're Christians, nosotros need to acquit like Christians. If we say we're saved just cipher has changed well-nigh us, something is wrong. We are not savedbygood works, only we are savedforskillful works, and the Gospel is a transforming agent in our lives.

  • 3. Born Again Christian: The Birthmark of Compassion

    3. Born Again Christian: The Birthmark of Compassion

Those who are truly saved also bear the birthmark of compassion. How can you know that you are a Christian? Past what you believe, by how you live, and by whom you love. Love is a recurring theme in ane John, and the campaigner leaves no doubt virtually how it permeates the lives of true Christians. "Beloved," he wrote, "let us love one another, for beloved is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. . . . We know that we take passed from death to life, because we dearest the brethren" (1 John 4:seven; three:14).

Do yous honey your brothers and sisters in the family of God? Those who are truly saved are those who enjoy and bless the household of faith, the family of God.

  • 4. Born Again Christian: The Birthmark of Conflict

    4. Born Again Christian: The Birthmark of Conflict

A fourth sign of being truly saved is disharmonize. According to 1 John 5:4, "Whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith." The give-and-takeovercomeimplies a struggle. Nosotros're faced with an adversary whom we must overcome. Our adversary is identified in 1 John 2:xiv as the wicked i: "I have written to y'all, young men, considering y'all are stiff, and the word of God abides in you, and y'all have overcome the wicked one." John went on in the side by side verses to say: "Do not love the earth or the things in the world. . . . For all thatisin the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world" (1 John ii:fifteen-17).

When you're genuinely born of God, yous'll be growing to exist an overcomer as you deal with the temptations around you lot—the world, the flesh, and the devil. You may not be victorious over every temptation every time, but you'll make progress in gaining more than victories and losing less battles as you grow stronger in Christ and in the power of the abiding Word of God.

  • 5. Born Again Christian: The Birthmark of Conduct

    5. Built-in Once again Christian: The Birthmark of Behave

That leads to the final bespeak I desire to brand: We can encounter evidence for the validity of salvation in our desire to carry ourselves in a fashion that pleases God. Co-ordinate to 1 John 3:nine, "Whoever has been built-in of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God."

If we're not careful, we might interpret this verse to teach that anyone who is born of God never sins. That would conflict with other passages in the Bible that describe u.s.a. as fallible and often failing.

In i John 3:9, the word for sin is a present active infinitive and it describes a continuous activeness. John is non saying that whoever sins in one case is not built-in of God. That would disqualify all of us. It would certainly disqualify me. But John is saying, in effect, "Whoever keeps on willfully sinning, violating God's law with stubborn disregard and ongoing wickedness, cannot have assurance of salvation."

If nosotros are truly saved, we will grieve over our sins, confess them, and seek God's grace to practice better.

  • You can have assurance of salvation today.

You tin can have assurance of conservancy today.

His grace is inexhaustible and His salvation is irreversible. Brand sure you take confessed Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and and so trust Him with your eternal future. He will never leave you or forsake you. His Word was given that you might know Jesus Christ as your Savior and that you might know that you accept eternal life.
